Investigating the Edinburgh University

In Edinburgh, Scotland, 1582, just twenty four years after the Bishop Robert Reid of the St Magnus Cathedral in Kirkwall passed away leaving his funds which were to become the University’s endowment, the establishment was able to be formed by a Royal charter granted by James VI. Thus the ancient but prestigious University of Edinburgh could be founded and came into being as one of the principal and most highly regarded centers for teaching and research. By the 18th century Edinburgh University had become one of the most recognized universities in the entire continent and in 2006 the Academic ranking for World universities rated the University of Edinburgh as the 11th in the whole of Europe, an outstanding achievement.

Up to this point Edinburgh University was made up of 9 faculties but in 2002 this was changed and reorganized into three distinct ‘Colleges’ as such. The ‘Colleges’, which now contain twenty-one ‘schools’, are notably larger then the departments that they now substitute. The three ‘Colleges’ are made up by the Humanities and Social Sciences or (HSS), Science and Engineering (CSE) and lastly Medicine and Veterinary Medicine known as (MVM).

The Residence at Edinburgh University is taken very seriously as it is regarded as an important and vital aspect to a student’s success creating a stress-less area where they can do personal study and so through the Accommodation Services Office advice and guidance as to the variety of accommodation available can be found depending on pricing and location most suitable to the particular student can be determined and the suitable residential space can be made through the Edinburgh University accordingly.

The vast and significant Edinburgh University Library which is considered the principle library in the world was founded in 1580. Although it has an amazing collection this cannot be compared to the collection size housed at Harvard University and although this is so, Students from far a field come to research the collection. The Edinburgh University Library has a main objective to service the needs for teaching as well as research but now as we move on into the world of computers which provides easy access so the demand for data in electronic format as well as full text increases. And So the EUL has come into existence as a Hybrid Library alongside other hard copy collections.
