Cycling in Scotland - Not to be Missed

The breathtaking rural scenery, clean air and wide open spaces are beginning to evolve into an arena for the ‘rugged weekenders’ wanting to escape from it all. In the last couple of years cycling has taken on a new avenue with tourists as well as locals taking full advantage. From what was supported by a few dedicated enthusiasts to where just over four years ago an estimated two hundred and nineteen million pounds was spent by British visitors on cycling holidays alone in Scotland, 2003.

It’s a journey into the secrets of Scotland from the forest trails to the country roads. For those starting out, experienced bike shops are waiting to assist you from cycling apparel to a variety of bikes depending on the nature of the ride. But don’t be disheartened should you wish to try it out before investing in it as a regular hobby, certain mountain bike centers will hire, thus good research is necessary. When it comes to cycle apparel on a general basis “layering” should be the standard with the outer most garments being waterproof, windproof and made from breathable fabric. Strong trainers are advised as walking maybe required depending on the choice of trail. Lastly it’s always wise to keep a fleece jacket, gloves and hat for the cooler seasons. This new adventure has also been made easy by the limitless stock of emergency supplies based solely for the enthusiastic cyclist by rural shop owners.

Here Scotland becomes your own world, a hidden treasure of history, fauna and flora experienced in idyllic scenery so diverse. From the restless mountains, enchanting forests to the vastness of the rugged coastlines and islands abound. Cycle trails have been expertly tailor made to suit your circumstances from families to professionals, to a bustle free day trip down the country or a challenging three weeks of pure adrenaline, choice is plentiful. A good reminder though when researching your cycle trail is the season you choose to visit. Although nothing can be said for certain, for in Scotland all seasons can happen in one day! The eastern and central regions of Scotland tend to be drier then the west. The best would be outside of the tourist period which is during July and August. The prime period thus would be early or late season.

Some popular areas to seek out your perfect cycling trail is the 7 Stanes Centre in Ae, mountain biking on the Isle of Arran, Cairngorms, Fort William and Moray monster trials situated in Ben Aigan are just a few sites that can be looked at. IMBA or International Mountain Bicycling Association has for the second consecutive year nominated Scotland for the Global Superstar in their Annual Report.

Why is this the perfect destination for the most unforgettable cycling holiday? It could be the ideal Scottish terrain seemingly made with cycling in mind.
